I Am Of the Earth

I am of the earth,
nothing beyond.
Being of the earth
has been quite enough.

I began to exist
as the result of the natural urges
of my mother and father.
I was sperm.
I was egg.
And so, I am me for a time.
One among many on this planet,
inconsequential and forgettable.

But for this night,
I’ll surrender to the fleshly concerns
of this short life.
For this night,
I’ll indulge in the sweet pleasure
of physical touch,
tasting the earth
and sharing in its bounty.

This is only proper before
returning to the earth
from which I came.

Author's Note
Yes, these natural urges are sometimes quite enough to hold back the waves of depression that would end me. This is a sketch from happier times when the woman who gave me life was still living.
