Silk
I avoid common
pleasantries we end
up falling merciless
at the knees to
as I imagine
you get asked
these questions
quite often,
so we discuss the mentees who
still ring you occasionally, eagerly
filling you in about what's happening
because the powdered wig remains
your life long companion,
how one got their first win recently
and couldn't believe it until they
returned to chambers, you show
me silk scarves your sister gifted
last month as she accompanied
you to your lastest appointment
I stand beside you smiling,
feeling your spirit held intact
while asking me how smooth
does silk feel against the
palm of my hands
I know you'll never
read this, or hear this
but I felt my hands slowly
begin turning into infants
because I too
am a student
losing a life
long teacher.
