Laughlin from the Sky

A sudden land blaze

Where am I?

The sky is honest
The land tells lies.
So many patchwork quilts
Neat human geometry
the higher you go.

45 minutes from Phoenix
a small crop of flashing signs below,
a river behind them.

I'm always guessing in the air

Where am I?

But I'm fairly certain i know this: Laughlin, Nevada

A weekend...what?
Fourteen years ago?

I want to start parsing that weekend
Neat cognitive geometry
Remembering this
Selectively forgetting that.

Was that the trip when he did this to me?
And that too?
Flashing memories of flying

No...

The room smelled like smoke
from the casino below.
That's what I settle on:
smoke.

The experience smelled like smoke.
He does not exist

Smoke.

As I strain to the right
for a last glimpse from my airplane window
neon lights flash
like lightning.
Like a storm
I've passed over.

Like a promise.
