A Prayer Before Sleeping
As I lay me down to sleep
I hope that death my soul will reap
If I die before I wake
No more suffering must I take
No one waste one single tear
I was never happy here
Should this be my final rest
Ill release this burden from my chest
Eternal slumber will set me free
Deaths embrace deliver me

Dear R,
While a bit on the dark side of this prayer, I appreciated the direct and gut wrenching feelings. For me, this is a very sorrowful yet soulful piece. H🌷

I was given this necklace as a child. It was a cross, but inscribed on it was “now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, guide me through the night and wake me with the morning light”
I always remember it because I used to clutch it when I went to sleep. As I’ve got older and dropped certain beliefs I binned the first half, but still mutter guide me through the night and wake me with the morning light to whatever is listening. It feels comforting.

I like that this takes that traditional prayer idea and turns it on its head. It’s a bit of a fuck you in many different aspects - life, beliefs, the world, your head.
