Signs And Signals

go forward and turn to the right
leave no stones unturned
keep walking

go backwards and turn to the left
leave the stones where they are
stop walking
run back to the signs

take an unidentifiable path
and move cautiously forward
hear noises
take slight jumps back
slowly moving forward again

cross an empty road
run across
see roadkill
stop to mourn
look too late
get hit by a truck
hobbling forward

swim through a river
faster
slower
current taking you where it pleases
but you are still moving forward

retrace your steps
and realize

while you are going backwards

you are still forever moving
forwards
