unpressed buttons

You spill words
melodic, beautiful, anguished
and I wonder idly
how it would feel
to get buried in your anger
the rise and fall of consonants
shorter, sharper, dangerous
on your beautiful tongue

Not that I want know
your rage
I'm just curious about these
buttons unpressed
and I would die to know
the full shape of you
the sparkle of your laughter
the light of your joy
the drop of your sadness
the burn of your passion
the fire of your rage
so that I can be a mirror
free to bear these things locked inside

Instead I listen to the spill of your words
melodic, beautiful, anguished
and know that I will probably never
see beyond this small side of you
because we don't have the kind of love
that is open and honest and true

We've only ever been single sided
but to know some of you
is better than knowing none of you
despite all these buttons unpressed
