freedom and chains

“Birds are a miracle because they prove to us there is a finer, simpler
state of being[,] which we may strive to attain.”—Douglas Coupland

“Man is a bird without wings and a bird is a man without sorrow.”
—Louis de Bernieres

softly feathered, fluffy bird,
yours the sweetest song i’ve heard,
how inclined your head, to look
as, perhaps, i were a book
you must struggle hard to read!

what new lessons could i teach
one whose wit i must beseech
to expand the narrowness
into which i now recess?
edify my soul, instead!

for you know the secret skies
under which my carcase lies;
and the world beyond the trees
your exuberance guarantees,
though my dreams are limited.

softly feathered, fluffy bird,
listen to my solemn word:
you’re my freedom, i your chains:
liberate my heart again,
else i might as well be dead.
