Midnight Club, part 1

Highway cruise. I’m out tonight.
Looking for a proverbial fight.
Ran an errand beforehand to the pharmacy.
In my passenger seat sits a new pregnancy test.
For my beloved.
I’ll see her tomorrow. (She brings me joy)
Down the highway I drone.
In search of a wanderer who might take me on.
Dark lonely road, with my modified German engineering machine.
Gives me wings.
Not another in sight.
The only crowd is the darkness of the night.
As the occasional highway road sign
Bids me good evening.
Musical libation of NEUE DEUTSCH HÄRTE genre.
German metal masterpiece.
No beautiful cheerleader girlfriend on my arm tonight.
I would never.
She’s safe at home.
She roams freely in my mind.
The pride of my heart.
Friends since childhood.
Into high school.
Until we became more. Much more.
Me her first, and she mine.
Consummated.
Nobody knows but us.
I’ll get her a ring soon.
Very soon, I know her size.
I’m committed to my boo.
She’s late, she missed her feminine flow this month.
Is she carrying our child?
My concern, but I glory at the thought of them.
We’ll know tomorrow.
Keep her home tonight.
My beautiful girl, might be making new life.
Tonight.
My darling.
Keep the innocents safe.
If I die, I knew the cost. Acceptable.  (Dude, that’s kinda senseless, just hang it up)
Take no others with me to the grave. Keep them safe.
The price is fair.

Up from behind he flashes his lights.
Hazards on, he pulls along side.
All-motor punks running nitrous oxide.
Electric blue paint resonates in the light.
Besting 9,000 RPMs in that sweet ride.
No problem at all, I’ve got work done.
Big turbo boost when the surge comes on.
The music goes mute, gotta hear the car speak.
A 50 MPH start is fine with me,
Drop a gear, steady 3000 RPMs, just right.
Boosted inline-6, telling me “at your service, sir.”
Time to put up or shut up.
Let’s do this.

3 honks flags the race.
Smash the gas, Engine howls to life!
Feather that throttle, it’s too much floored,
Spikin’ nearly 20 PSI!
As my wide tires fight for grip over the gross display of horsepower.
Grabs down tight, but he got the jump on me.
And I make quick work to pull on up.
Contentious grip.
He’s redlining every gear.
Hitting that squeeze for all it’s worth.
As I surge the boost, it sounds like a jet!
Engine proudly singing it’s full song.
Oh the symphony!!
And pull away, he’s now getting gapped.
No doubt he’s fast, but I have the turbocharged advantage.
2 car links, 4 car links, 6, I can’t let this up.
Slammin’ gears like wrestlers on Saturday night.
God, we’re stupid, right?
Fatuous bravado, defined.
If we’re gonna swing dicks, let’s swing dicks!
130 MPH comes quick, he’s trailing in my rearview.
I could call it done now. But why bow out?
We’re topping out tonight, leave no doubt.
As I’m pulling away.
The engine fully engaged, yes, do my bidding.
As the maximum approaches quick, still way ahead.
I reach the end, speedo buried.
Engine topped out, yowling it’s highest note.
Top speed achievement unlocked again.
It will not go any faster.

Time to celebrate a decisive victory.
The air slows me down, throttle at idle, engine braking applied.
Don’t touch the service brakes yet.
Everything’s under control, the high yet lingers.
Satisfied.
As we bring it back down, opinions settled.
Facts remain.
He pulls along side, brotherly nod, I give him thumbs up.
A thumbs up salute returned as away he goes, thanks for the ride.
Be safe.

No spoils for the victor.
No trophies, no medals. No cheering girls.
Just the accomplished sense of victory
As I eke my way up the victor’s ladder.
My music back on.
The Germans sing to me.
Wir sind die Kinder
Wir sind die Kinder der Nacht
.
Anybody else? No one’s next?
And the thought springs up in the back of my mind,
Maybe I should hang this shit up?
Quit while I’m ahead.

That’s enough for tonight.
I’m going home to call her.
