small prayers

I rest a prayer on your heartbeat
like it's a breath of life
a breath of hope
and not just a reflection
of my own desperation
that keeps watching you
chase bad dreams
like there is a high
in there somewhere
if you just inhale hard enough

I place a prayer on my restless mind
and ask to dream of you
but the drugs that kill
the insomnia
bar the gateway to dreams
and instead I sleep like the dead
in empty nothingness
your face just elusive in the dark
as it is in the daylight

I look up at wide blue sky
send up a prayer to the languid clouds
floating lazily overhead
that wherever you are
you're doing okay

I'll never pretend like God is on our side
but who's to say he's the only one listening
so I send out a prayer
and hope someone or something hears it
and finds your soul
lost somewhere between the ground
and the ether
and kisses your soul
with all the love you deserve
even if it doesn't bring you back to me
