Famous Blue Raincoat Interpretation

Its early in the morning and I'm sitting here wide awake
Jane's sound asleep and I can't help but think of you, my friend
Out there trying to lose yourself
Lose the pain that you are burdened with
This addiction that eats at your soul

Jane came over and she was wearing your shirt
She took it to remember you
She told me that you were trying to get clean
Were you able to beat your demons?

You had aged so much the last time I saw you
The drugs seemed to ravage your body
Your blue coat that you cherished
Was tattered and filthy
It was hard to see how you had let yourself go
You were searching for the one who had your heart
But you found Jane that night
She was never the same woman after that

She was so enthralled by you
By your pain and suffering
Your sadness reached her soul
She speaks of you often

The truth is, even though what happened destroyed me
Even though I felt betrayed
I miss you as much as she does
She was never really mine
You showed me that, whether intentionally or not
I suppose that earns you my appreciation
She may be here but she waits for you
Ill fill the space while she hopes for your return

You have my gratitude
There was a longing and an emptiness in her eyes
No matter how much I tried I could never fill it
I stopped trying
You took that away ever so briefly

Jane came over and she was wearing your shirt
She took it to remember you
She told me that you were trying to get clean
