Got the wind knocked from my atmosphere
I fell from a tree as
a little girl and landed
on my back, mostly unharmed
but for about 15 seconds the wind
was knocked out of me as
I laid staring at the blue sky
neck cording as I tried to inhale
against deflated lungs
it was momentarily terrifying
tonight I fall
face first from
your skyscraper
and land in the
grass over the septic tank
my hands dig divots in the ground
mouth open-jawed
eating
into the earth,
a rictus of terror
as my pupils pinpoint
and my body thrashes
The veins in my eyes burst,
a high-pitched
ringing in my ears becomes
an inner monologue,
and the skin of my
neck sloughs off
from the pressure of
holding a scream
legs skittering like
an electrocuted corpse
and I am too
stunned to
be terrified
until I try
to
exhale
from
your
untended ground
a little girl and landed
on my back, mostly unharmed
but for about 15 seconds the wind
was knocked out of me as
I laid staring at the blue sky
neck cording as I tried to inhale
against deflated lungs
it was momentarily terrifying
