the thorning of the prickalala tree
“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little
temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor
safety.”―Benjamin Franklin
caress my face,
you fragrant morning wind;
let me embrace
your early peace of mind.
night sleep has flown
and left me wide awake,
new dreams to own,
old nightmares to forsake.
quicken my feet
with sparkling pearls of dew;
excite the beat,
as day comes dancing through;
for i must glean
birdsongs and serenades
that swell between
bright mountains and dark glades.
the thorning of
the prickalala tree
shall well reprove
the wanton liberty
whose wasted hours
leave barren, at day’s end,
what fertile stores
night cannot comprehend.
entice my heart
to halo in the light,
new visions chart
where, late, the bitter night;
for all my thirst
your promises must cloy,
till i am versed
by life’s refreshing joys.
