Patterns
Established roles
present problems
over time
Eventually,
one wants to play against type,
The resentment brews
if another continually calls the shots
And that breakdown
can create fractures
I never protested
under the guidance
of the many seductions
But there were times
when I craved to initiate
and you were rarely open to it
I would have taken charge
and I know that was a key contributor
to the downfall,
but that pattern
prevented it
from ever happening.

Relationships should be equal, although they rarely are.
Open communication is the only way relationships work. Sharing power or giving your partner power is fine as long as it’s agreed upon. Too often things start out one way and if we don’t speak up and we just hope they change, the relationship deteriorates because our self worth deteriorates.

I think that take is spot on. In the heat of a new relationship, both parties often just stumble into their perceived role (at least on my reflection). It can happen without even being aware it is happening. Appreciate the comment, despite the sting of truth within its context.
