Inappropriate Performance
I'd thought about them all day
the sea of Christian smiles
staring up at the stage
waiting to be entertained
but all left studying the floor when I told the truth
Limp handshakes and polite applause
all my fault
I knew they'd be easily offended
and it would have been easy
to give them what they wanted
the tried and tested from the times before
a sprinkling of grit in the lines
to guarantee a tear
with the pauses for laughter
measured and rehearsed
everything timed to a fine art.
But I won't be going back
All my fault
for reading the truth in a church
breaking the news
that God is dead already
and the Devil's on his way
soon
No-one thanks
a harbinger of doom
the sea of Christian smiles
staring up at the stage
waiting to be entertained
but all left studying the floor when I told the truth
Limp handshakes and polite applause
all my fault
I knew they'd be easily offended
and it would have been easy
to give them what they wanted
the tried and tested from the times before
a sprinkling of grit in the lines
to guarantee a tear
with the pauses for laughter
measured and rehearsed
everything timed to a fine art.
But I won't be going back
All my fault
for reading the truth in a church
breaking the news
that God is dead already
and the Devil's on his way
soon
No-one thanks
a harbinger of doom
