The News & Cancer

 
There's the blood of a nine year old boy
in the snow in Bradford, England
Australians are feeding ants catfood
to help wipe out poisonous toads
which kill crocodiles and kangaroos
and five years from now  
my internet connection will be  
fifty times faster than today
 
In case I missed anything
they'll repeat it all  
every fifteen minutes
just to make sure I know
until there's something more important
I should get told
and there's always Afghanistan
they can fall back on
 
In the Second World War
the whole family gathered together  
in front of the wireless once a day
hushed by Hitler's advances after tea
 
The doctor's word was law
and cigarettes didn't kill you then
they gave them away for free
to the one's doing the fighting
and that was pretty much everybody
 
Cancer wasn't news
but today the news  
seems like cancer to me
