She Loved
She lived with the endings of life ever-present.
Her significance wasn’t found in eternity or
some cosmic existence beyond this world.
No, she understood there would be a final,
arbitrary, and probably unplanned, ending to all
that she knew even though what she knew of life
was wonderful.
Her love wasn’t given with the expectation
she’d be your love for life. For her, the end was
at the sharp edge of every beat of her heart.
If her heart beat for you, you were a lucky human.
And so, when her marriage ended,
she loved.
When new loves grew stale,
she loved anew.
When lovers treated her cheaply,
she raised her head and loved again.
Even when addiction gripped her life
leading her toward the inevitable,
she loved.
