I took a stroll with Death, Life and Love

Recently, I took a stroll with Death,
He held my hand, reassured me, there was love in his breath.
“This is my way” , Death’s voice saddened and sorrowed,
Sadly you are only guests, living lives on time borrowed.

We did the rounds of the wards,
The love, hope and care, it really deeply surprised me,
“We don’t give up without a fight”, I said,
Death agreed, he smiled, ye humans are undeniable…

And in those moments I realised,
Death was actually teaching me about life,
Peace, joy, hope, sorrow, human ingredients,
It now dawns on me, to really live,  you have to stand up and fight.

Recently, I took a stroll with Life,
She held my hand, admonished me, in her voice I felt strife.
She showed me Skid Row, fragile creatures, a world on drugs,
“Is this living or dying?”, she asks. Angels or Thugs?

We did the rounds of the streets,
The hurt, gloom and despair, it really deeply surprised me.
Life stood there, tears slowly drying,
No comfort in silence, she warned “If you’re not living, unfortunately, you’re dying”.

And in those moments I realised,
Life was actually teaching me about death,
I know now that it’s not enough to just exist,
We need to strive, surmount, we need purpose in each and every breath.

Recently, I took a stroll with Love,
But she did not take my hand, just sort of floated above,
You think I’m not with you, but I’m everywhere, everywhen,
I’m in your family, your words, I’m the ink in your pen,

And in those moments I realised,
Love was actually teaching me all along,
How to shoulder the burdens, to endure, to be strong,
I’m no longer afraid, sure I’ve been shown a glimpse of infinity,
A stroll with Death, Life and Love, the holy trinity.

Author's Note
I recently took my ill father to hospital. I saw more lust for life in that hospital among the dying than I often see out in life, where people should be living, but are instead dying...
