Take It In The Other Direction (If You Can)

You can't let it get the better of you.

It has to be practiced,
and understood
that despite
your intent

Something will happen
to veer you off course

And you will be pissed off
and it might compel you
to engage that negative loop
and will yourself into another tough year

The timing can be justified,
only four days into the new one
and already you've chipped a tooth
and awoke in a shiver
discovering the furnace
never kicked on

And the more you think about it
the more dangerous it becomes

And you want to blame someone,
maybe the universe itself
perverting the mind
to consider that instead
of conspiring with you,
it is working against you

And those moments,
make up a mindset
and it will probably
take some reaching,
but if you want to,
you can turn it around

And you should,
for if you work with it,
not against it,
next December
you might forget
it even happened
