Love Transcends Beliefs
Based on this morning's journal entry:
Joseph asked me to attend church with him. I’d suspected Joseph held religious beliefs. The church he attended had a reputation for being liberal and even accepting of the diverse communities, so I went with him and enjoyed the beautiful music, incense, and thoughtful words of liturgy.
Afterward I told Joseph I was an atheist but enjoyed the service. Joseph’s response was one of kindness and understanding. He assured me that he wouldn't pass judgment on my beliefs. "Couples can learn from their differences," he said.
Later that night, as we shared the intimacy of our second sexual union, something extraordinary happened. It was something beyond the mere joining of two bodies to make one flesh, a joining I’d felt many times before. In the midst of our openness, I experienced a very strong momentary belief in a divine presence. It felt like a set of loving eyes witnessed our naked union with approval. In those moments of familiar rhythmic physical exertion, there was something more. The boundaries of our bodies were blurred.
After Joseph’s coming, tears of joy welled up in my eyes. I marveled at the idea that love, in its purest form, had the power to transcend ides. It was a night where the boundaries of faith and disbelief softened.
"I suppose I’ve moved from atheist to agnostic," I said before we parted.
"That's progress," Joseph said.
"I'll go to church with you again if you ask," I said.
"How about next Sunday," Joseph said.
