mr sky
[No. 1 from The Children’s Collection]
o mr sky,
perched there on high,
i wish that i
could learn to fly!
i’d come to you
to get a true,
amazing view
of close-up blue.
what makes a cloud
thunder so loud,
when in a crowd
cloud heads are bowed?
sir, will you please
tell them to cease;
put me at ease―
i’m on my knees.
lend me your light
both day and night;
shine from your height
and bless my sight.
one final thing:
though i’ve no wing,
my lips i bring:
teach me to sing!
