Icarus
You are consumed by the light.
When you look to the sky
You see God.
I see risk.
Who are you to be so transfixed
By the sun? Your eyes burn and
Weep but your stare never waivers.
I am safe, I am caring.
The sun holds hatred in its
Glare. Why not me?
You grasp your creation gently,
Preparing for flight. You believe
In yourself and your ability.
I don’t believe in you. I
Think you are not ready.
My words don’t matter to you,
You no longer speak my
Language.
You jump.
I hold my breath.
You fly. You think you are
Beautiful.
You are not beautiful, you are a
Mangled bird.
You glide closer to your love.
Your wings begin their slow,
Predicted drip.
You get closer still
The ungraceful fall begins,
Flailing and panicked.
You hit the water, and I
Am not grieved.
I mourned you long before
I loved you.
