Ode to Persephone

[Its last] green is gold*
burnt red, pumpkin orange
crumpling brown
season-aged leaves
hanging by a vein
from gnarly twigs

Persephone wanders through
autumnal remnants
knowing this moment
will become a strange ghost
haunting the glades
upon her return to Hades

Her mother, Demeter
goddess of abundance
mourning her daughter's absence
breathes a winter's death
across life's surface
until Persephone's spring release

Teaching us all:

A ghost can only haunt
when we refuse to let go
