Brain Damage

Memories with you are some of the few
that don’t float aimlessly around my head.
Your favourite things are desperately filed in vain,
weighted with anchor and chain
so they don’t drift with each oscillation of fate.

All the places we’ve been
are laid out flat on a map
with pins in my brain so I won’t forget a thing.
Even your voice takes up space
and our last warm embrace
is held pride in place - by pillars that dare not falter.

If my thoughts could talk
every time you came up
you would get tired of answering my call.
The stolen letters I scrawl
don’t say much at all
and yet I still connect the dots with every flourish.

So grab my hand we’ll take one more stride
our past hides safely inside my mind,
when you appear I’ll remember our time together.
Your love still exists
somewhere further than this
until then I’ll feel you in the safety of nature.
