Especially Not Tonight

She was slumped in the doorway
drunk (maybe worse)
one pretty ankle
decorating the sidewalk
rain droplets glistening
on pink leather boots

Trouble is that some women
think they can drink like a man
and when they find out
they cant
it's mostly too late

The ugliness starts
at the mouth
it grows and spreads
until even famous tits and ass
start to look and feel
same shit as nobody's
and if you're not lucky
worse than everyone else's

By dawn her size eight
had gotten heavier
than a sack of rugs
and as I hauled her up the flights
I was getting scared

I was worried she might surface
and begin to lash out
wake every neighbor in the block
jail break time from noddyville
all directions surprised at once

It had happened before
her crazy arms and legs
windmilling in my face
and then tomorrow
she'd be
licking her torn knuckles
cussing me like a whore

Tonight I was lucky
by the time we reached the bed
she was snoring
her limp neck
swung sideways
like a groaning refrigerator door

I realized
it might still be too risky
to undress her
so I pulled the covers over
pushed her under
and killed the lamp

Happy Valentine's
I thought
sleep with your boots on
what do I care

And anyway
it was all my fault
Hadn't she told me
more than once
if I loved her
I'd never buy her flowers
from the gas station
not last minute
on my way home

especially
not tonight
