Have We Remembered

Have we remembered the Cross quarter festivals
As Imbolc past
The threshold of spring
Bright and sunny was ill omened
Cloudy and dark bode well
And presaged soon planting

Did we step out of the world and into the present
To honor the conjunction of place and time
The blackthorns of Cailleach are blooming
The lambing time's come
And the milking of ewes
Make preparations for sowing
Before the calving begins

Have twigs of rowen been placed
In barns and above doorways
The light of the year is entered
Washed we hands and feet
And not least the head
Tis the time of rebirth

Is our spring cleaning done
Have we remembered to walk sunwise 'round the holy wells
With heartfelt prayers for healing
Or made offerings of milk and porridge
To earth and to sea

The wheel of the year is turning
Were the lamps trimmed and lit
Were the bonfires burning
The flames of Kildare have gone out
To the goddess appropriated
Brigid
She of milk and flame
Midwives and healers
The muse of poets
Tis the time of the maiden
