Muddied by Hope
The deep waters of the future grow clearer
As the tanks roll in
And the missiles rain down
Muddied only by the hope that resistance is not futile
That brave words count for something
That the will of the people can make a difference
Hope, the spice that keeps us going when all appears lost
That keeps us glued to our screens
Hoping that somehow the villain can be thwarted
Distracts us from the Elephant in the room
Even as that Elephant
Opens the heavens down under yet again
As the check list of improbable events rolls onward
Next will the aliens indeed appear?
Or will the long feared nuclear winter come first?
At least there is still the narrative imperative
The story is not yet finished
Currents still churn in the water
I watch and wait in my small corner of the world
A rabbit caught in the headlights
Dazzled and confused
Transfixed
Muddied by hope.
As the tanks roll in
And the missiles rain down
Muddied only by the hope that resistance is not futile
That brave words count for something
That the will of the people can make a difference
Hope, the spice that keeps us going when all appears lost
That keeps us glued to our screens
Hoping that somehow the villain can be thwarted
Distracts us from the Elephant in the room
Even as that Elephant
Opens the heavens down under yet again
As the check list of improbable events rolls onward
Next will the aliens indeed appear?
Or will the long feared nuclear winter come first?
At least there is still the narrative imperative
The story is not yet finished
Currents still churn in the water
I watch and wait in my small corner of the world
A rabbit caught in the headlights
Dazzled and confused
Transfixed
Muddied by hope.
