One day
we may freeze our bodies
resurrect dinosaurs
and conquer stars
playing god with atoms
until the future shrinks
but the enemy waits
and the enemy
always wins
For the enemy
victory means nothing
and defeat
means everything
to us
The enemy
is all around
inside and outside
stalking invisibly
taking stock
stealing all we love
dismissing dreams
with an axe of years
wielded from shadows
The enemy is nowhere
and everywhere at once
knows all there ever will be
knew all there ever was
The enemy waits
has no need to fight
and whether counted
in moons or minutes
whether nameless or named
the enemy always
wins

I think turning 50 a few days ago makes me more keenly aware of exactly the enemy it is your referring to.... At least it's fair across the board.... No one escapes it in the end....
A reminder to try and take advantage of each and every moment, possible.

Thank you and belated happy birthday young lady. I just wish someone had told me earlier how time keeps accelerating the older you get and it's a bitch realizing that your past is greater than your future. I try not to think about it too much but there's no escaping the relentless death march of days. I tried trashing all the clocks in the house but it made no difference and when I ask younger people to trade ages there are no takers. I'm hoping I inherited the longevity gene my parents were blessed with but nothing's guaranteed. Right now I'll settle for the 100.
