Eternity is Cruel

Did you mean to take your life
Or were you just dying to get high?
To rise above the shadows holding you down
Were the memories more than you could bare?
Were your fears a spider web you couldn't share?

I would change everything on the day we met
Would have made you my lover that afternoon
Taken you to my apartment to erase 40 years of pain
All those years of friendship Flushed down the drain
Wouldn't that have been a better path for us
Than the dark road of nods and tears drowning your dreams?
If only I could go back and persuade the girl inside you
To choose love over superficial cravings
You would still be here and in my arms instead of dead
Now I hope there is no afterlife, no more suffering in shadows
That neither 40 years nor 40 poems could lighten your soul
and my prayers will be ignored to spare your eternal tears

Lisa, if only my love could comfort you now, I would join you to shield your soul from the embers and eternal flame...
