Why Fear We the Darkness

Why fear we the darkness,
The sound of shadow and revealing,
Left only with our interpretations,
Of imaginary terrors seeded in self,
In flaws yet unraveling carefully woven avatars,
Leaving naked, shriveled husks,
Overbaked by illusory radiance.

Too long spent in darkness,
Too long listening to faded glories,
Having never been,
How we scream to mute the silence,
How we turn in panicked circles,
Seeking shelter from truth,
Our truth, profound and now excavated.

How we fear what others may glimpse,
As horrors of character manifest,
Made clear, potent, undeniable,
In the darkness,
Whose only irredeemable sin is unmasking,
Carefully painted faces and hidden alcoves,
Where we sought to hide what we truly fear.

Why fear we the darkness,
Its predatory stare from sightless eyes,
It cares not to judge,
It speaks no harassing word,
It never moves, never shifts, never leaves,
Serves only to enlighten us,
Shining brilliantly upon the monsters we are.
