Misquoted Quotes

Way back when I was young,
With colourful dreams and sky-high hopes,
‘crime hardly pays’ was a quote-song we frequently sung.
But age and experience has broadened my scopes.
     Now I’m certain current quotes were misquoted in olden days.
      ‘Crime hardly pays’ was misquoted from ‘crime handsomely pays.’

I remember to have heard a quote,
Proclaiming that, ‘Love conquers all.’
Believe you me it’s truly a misquote.
It initially was, ‘Love conquers 0’.
      But a myopic typist mistook that zero for letter ‘O’.
      Which he mistranslated to be short form for ‘all’.

In the country I proudly belong,
The ‘Love conquers all’ misquote;
Has been refashioned after been proven wrong.
‘Cash conquers all’ is the quote now hot.
      And now love is cash’s slave,
      Following cash’s remarkable conquest over love.

Brethren, be careful with whom you entrust your souls
To. Cause titles like prophet, father, apostle and even Born Again
Are nowadays mere pseudonyms of lazy-boned beings with corrupted cores,
Exceptionally excellent at unashamedly using God’s name for personal gain.
      Now the sure safeguard from soul corruption,
      Lies in trusting none and treating everyone with suspicion.

We live in the era of nothing comes from nothing,
Where having talent isn’t enough for one to fly.
One needs someone already up there or in one’s pocket ‘something’.
If not, one can still fly- but alas not that high!
      He misquoted he who said ‘life is unfair.’
      It initially was, ‘life is unfair if devoid of despair.’
