No Way Home
The mists,
Closing in about...
The woods darkly kissed!
Deepening doubt...
Claws slashing!
Flaying flesh from bone.
Tendrils lashing,
And no way home.
Reality crashing!
Closing in about...
The woods darkly kissed!
Deepening doubt...
Claws slashing!
Flaying flesh from bone.
Tendrils lashing,
And no way home.
Reality crashing!

Nope, not even close! It is actually a short horror poem written in a surrealist style where what you see in it is only a reflection of what you want to see, since nothing is spelled out explicitly. This makes it so that the reader's own personal ideas of horror are what is playing out in their imagination when they are reading it. Think vampires are scary? You'll picture vampires as the monster. Zombies? That's the monster, then. Werewolves? Got you covered there too! As for the tendrils... they can be anything from the branches and vines of living trees to an eldritch horror with actual tentacles, like Cthulhu. This is basically a poetic ink blot test. Since I am a psychotherapist, I thought the idea would be a very interesting one. Looks like I was right!

Made me think of how anxiety or fear encompasses. One's own personal horror.
With a few words you were able to visualize an emotion. Really enjoyed.

Thanks! It was definitely a bit of a challenge to work within so few words, but it definitely ended up way better than I at first expected it would, that's for sure. Glad you liked it!

I am sorry, Sybil, that I did not until today get the chance to read your poetry and comment. You are a good daughter figure to me, and as one who is like your mother I want to make you happy. This poem very much called to me right from the title and then once I read it I knew why. It is dark, has many layers and many possible meanings, all of them brilliant. It shows you have a good brain that can work on many small subtle levels to create things that the mind can conjure up. And in a horror story like this poem is, that makes it a lot more frightening than if what was happening was spelled out clearly. I like dark and surreal works, and this you deliver here. I must read your other works now!

Oh, that's okay mommy! I know you're a very busy lady what with your brand new business up in the northeast and all. I hope it's going smashing for you! I'm out of work at the moment, but looking for a new job. I might have to wait a bit before I do though, since my brain is really messed up big time right now and I can't do any adult things for a while. Maybe a long, long while. Good thing I'm living at home even if I can't stand my family at all. I suppose my life could be a lot worse! At least I still have you, and I still have Kara, and all our friends. I had a really good time over with Chloe's family for Christmastime. It helped me realize I need to be a kid again and not hold it in anymore like I've been trying so hard to do these past who knows how many years. I probably couldn't write a horror poem at the moment, but I'm happy you liked this one of mine! It was a good one, I have to admit. Surreal is the story of my life, mommy! Have a happy night, or day, or whatever it is when you finally read this. I love you, mommy! And Kara too, of course.
