Sinking to the bottom of the sea

Sinking to the bottom of the sea
I feel myself growing smaller... harder
immense pressure changing me
a sphere of pure sadness

sinking deeper still
an impenetrable shell
safe from pain
nothing can touch me
nothing can make me feel again

then you found me
washed up by the tides
hard, encrusted,
just lifeless flotsam
yet you see value in this ugly thing

you clean and scape and polish
working tirelessly
revealing the man I once was
someone worthy of love

Oh, the agony!
nerves regenerate
emotions wake from sleep
I try to pull my shell around me

you just hold my hand
telling me it will be all right
feeling all my grief
and then there is no more pain

I am a man once more
seeing beauty and kindness
sadness and grief and love
I let all these feelings fill my soul

and I become more than a man
or maybe the man I was meant to be
bending under heavy burdens
never to be broken

A man with love in his heart
walking hand and hand
looking for encrusted shells
to clean and scape and polish
finding treasure thrown out by society
as you once found me
