Lighthouse
Lighthouse
The towering lighthouse casts its beam,
rotating slowly 'round and 'round.
One great eye seeming to scan into forever
wherever forever goes without end....
or so we like to believe.
Below, the water crawls across as it always has,
as it always does with only the faintest sway in motion.
Breathing.
Inhaling and exhaling the last breaths of god only knows how many.
And the lighthouse continues doing its thing
as it has for so long now.
But now we hear that humming sound we missed before,
almost as if it were trying to say it is happy to do its duty
watching for the ships.
Sure it is.
Bring them home.
“Hey! Over here!” it sends.
…..bring us home!.....
So they come.
They always do.
The eye hypnotizes them.
Fools them.
It does not warn them of the jagged rocks underneath the breathing water.
How can it?
Can it?
They cry out happily!
They are going to make it after all!
Lost for so long but now the beam winks at them, welcoming their arrival.
It winks and the water crawls
waiting to feed again.
