Verbena summer
Profiled tall
shot its purple clusters
dwarfed the agapanthus
in the wilting heat of summer
spread its slender grandeur
insect came to sip
from the coolest days of May
June still saw it rise, progress the highest tip
surrounded by the hum of bees
July, still ardent in display
dominate all beneath its feet in Augusts heat
it shows the way, its message clear
to grow, with an open giving hand, each leave replete
still swaying in Septembers winds
summers gone and autumn tears
the flurry of Octobers leaves
now greying clusters
do we reflect its fading lustre
November, dormant, waiting for the springs refresh
sleeping on through winters depths
a little death, then rise refreshed
that reincarnation, again to look its best
