The Wishing Well

I make a wish kiss my coin
then toss it into the well
watch it fall mixing among all the sparkling coins
representing the dreams of others.

I wistfully wonder after the people
who came before me casting their lot
what were they hoping for?
The love of their life, money or a broken body made whole?

Sadly I know my wish is just a fancy
born to never come true
my coin sinks to the bottom
with my heart
my desire unrealistic.

I wish to grow wings and be free of this world
fly free to the cosmos my mighty wings unfurled
what a silly dream
I realise with a sigh
so I light a cigarette and smile to myself at the fool i'm being.

Toss my spent smoke down the well
a coin sparkles up at me
in my ear a voice I hear
your dream will come true but not today.

You still have work to do
your soul must be enlightened first
some day you will fly free
even if it's with wings unseen.
