Let’s lie together
You had to make
the sandwiches
because I almost burned
down a kitchen
making
cereal
they sit in the cooler,
forgotten as
I read aloud the dirty
parts of the book
I’m totally into right now,
and you laugh at
the overblown
dialogue,
and squeeze
my jean-covered
thigh
Your head is in
my lap and it’s
that golden
hour of the day,
where the sun
erases the
worry lines
from
your forehead
in soft brush
strokes
that make me
wonder about
heaven
I put the book
down and stare
just stare,
blown
away by your
beauty,
and by the
nakedness
of your intent.
You reach up,
run
a thumb
across my
lip and say
I look better
without an hour
of hair and makeup
and I lean down
to kiss you
whispering
that you’re
a liar.
You get that
wicked flash
in your eye,
the one you
get every time
I challenge you
and flip me over
before I can even
swear
and you teach
me what truth
tastes like
in the slow
way your hands
burn the outline
my rib cage
while you push
my faded
t-shirt
over my head.
You show me
my truth
with a harsh
urgency,
something possessive
and sultry
where your
name isn’t ripped
from my lips
but offered
freely
in prayer
We lie together
on the truth:
skin wanting skin
But you prove
beyond a shadow
of a doubt
that skin wanting skin
is a ghost
of the way
I want you.
