The Midnight North

Looking for meteors last night
I noticed an owl instead...
Heading north in a silent flight
Under the satellites overhead.
It flapped with an effortless beat
As haphazard as a cloud adrift
Atop dark layers of dog day heat
Still rising as nocturnal lift.
But then I lapsed into a dream
Of circumpolar stellar spin
Where dipper pots began to steam
And Draco had a gnarly fin...
Which bid welcome to that northbound bird
To course Polaris undeterred!
