evil cannot be pure
because the very self of it
- its raison d'ętre, reason for
being - reposes in impurity.

like the debunking of a cliche. I think you didn’t need to put in “reason for being”; think raison d’etre was simply enough.

Yeah, you may have a point there. For me “reason for being” felt slightly different from “the most important thing about something”, which is the definition of the French phrase. Plus I did it for scansion. But my scansion is personal rather than objective anyway.
So yeah... I can see how the French phrase on its own would be more impactful. Thank you for your kind and helpful comment, my friend!
