Love is New
“Love is New”
I never loved you as you had earned.
In the end, neither of us has learned
How to stay lost in each other’s gaze.
It goes on and on in so many ways
The thought of, “What if I never kissed you?”
What if I met you today, and love was new?
There are voices telling me to never meet you again—
To never make the mistake of letting anyone in.
And I just want to tell you that I am sorry,
That my heart is a part of your history
And I know you feel the same,
But I am willing to take the blame,
Though the voices say you will kill me,
If you get lost in someone who makes you happy.
It breaks my heart to think of such music as you’ll play
With another lover on such a sunny day.
I want to protect the pieces of myself
That you could only see in someone else
The pieces of me I longed to show you
That your heart in defiance was blind to.
And I want to send you a letter
That I know you’ll never read
Saying to treat them better
Because that is what I always used to need.
I want to protect the scars inside my mind.
I never loved anyone who would be kind.
Never saw a gentle beast in another’s eyes,
But you…you wore such a safe disguise
You kissed me and I couldn’t help but believe
That you would never leave,
And it breaks my heart to know
That if I left, you wouldn’t notice me go.
Now the voices are saying someday you’ll come home
Because we’re so scared of being alone,
And I cannot protect my heart if I am lost in you
Because when I see you again, love is new.
