What tales can be told
of soles
of the legions
who have passed over
this black-grey
on their way to elsewhere.
Rumble of wheels
Tramping of step
Tumbling bones onto tepid embrace
Pad of paw
And even light touch of winged feet
or slither of slight insect.
Through sun and shine
rain and hail
snow and flood,
ever underfoot
watching skywards.
