To ride the wave I go (NaPoWriMo 2022 #14)

Sometimes,
I stay awake
all through the night,
fulfilling a self-sworn oath
in an attempt to outlast
my insomnia.
I stay awake
not to watch the dawn
crest the morning
as it crashes light onto the darkness,
but to stretch out a day
into another one
in stubborn defiance
of convention.

Then usually
in the following evening
my mind starts to wander
and eyelids gain weight
enough for anchoring
my sleep pattern to the normal
for a good while,
before the Hydra roars with another head
and shatters my brittle conformity
into empty places
only found in the early hours.

My mind wanders
and I ride with it,
into giddy bliss
that finds in everything,
a genuine comfort
because of bewildered joy.
