A PEACEFUL PROTEST

he thought it
had finally hit the fan,
a fatal blow
to the american dream he was living,
the new house on eastbrook,
his son working on that old chevy
in the garage
and them eating steaks
or sharing a beer and talking shit
and it's what you make of it, son,
greatest country in the world
no apologies necessary
and then all of that was circling the drain
and the best thing that had happened to the country in decades
cheated out a second term
and jesus, it was cold that morning
and the air electric
and the whole thing wound tighter than it should be
and something told him to put the brakes on
but a man don't drive a thousand miles
just to shiver in the cold with his finger up his butt
while history unfolds in front of him
and so suddenly there he was
standing firm for american democracy
in the middle of the capitol rotunda
and once the walls were breached
there was no backing down
or going back to how things used to be
