Image for the poem an empty shell

an empty shell

an empty shell,
a beautiful empty shell

this weightless, fragile shell
is not as beautiful as the life that could’ve been within

the smooth, marble exterior
no more beautiful than the kind, loving Creature that would have been

in fact the Creature that could’ve been, that would’ve been
is far more beautiful than the empty shell itself

but no matter how hard that loving Creature tries
They cannot gain back the love They give to the world

and so They change into what the world wants Them to be
an empty shell of what They once were, of what They could be

a plain, empty shell is worth more than Their life
worth more than Their happiness

because a plain shell is what everyone wants
so who cares, who cares what the Creature wants

so the Creature changes
changes into what the world wants

an empty shell
a terribly ugly, beautiful empty shell

Author's Note
I wrote this while on a trip as a reflection of my own life. I felt as though people didn't care abut your life, but rather about how to appear to be, so they can feel better about their own life. They would prefer an empty shell of a person rather than that true person.
