The April Snow

“The April Snow”

How. How can this be?
I will grow old without you.
What is to become of me?
What am I supposed to do?

The hours fill themselves with naked travail.
I saw our future together in such detail.
Anyone can see that I have lost my way
Amid the promise of our wedding day.
Was that our sun sinking into forever?
Were we not dreaming of Him together?
Or was it only behind my eyes that he shone?
Alas. Our sun is gone—
Never to rise in the glory of the rays
To shine beyond the end of days.

What thunder whispers to the petals?
In sadness, we light the candles
Of our parting—a flame in peace, a flame in sorrow
To light our way in the April snow.

You bury me
To take from my lips the taste you longed for.
But you carry me
Like a burden you can bear no more.
But you choose to bring me there,
Where I unearth you, as if in prayer…
Dying to see you everywhere
But only watching as you go
Disappearing into the April snow.
