Momma told me not to come
My daddy used to sing that line.
Only later did I find out that it meant he’d been with
someone other than my mother again.
I think I saw his eyes across the loud room last night
asking why I was there.
When a college boy pressed himself against me as we danced,
I felt what women must have felt in my father.
I was weak and hurt from the love I’d lost.
The college boy was handsome and
I let him have his way with me.
I had my way with him as well and in those moments
all pains vanished.
When we were done, I saw my father standing at the bedroom
door with tears in his eyes. It was his face the day he left us.
