Door Wide Open
Sunlight, streaming through broken window pane
Slanting, bathing a room with a curious light
Dust-covered wood flooring, walls sagging in vain
Attempting to remain despite the many years of decay.
Abandoned.
Alone.
Forgotten.
Feeling watched, walking through this house that time forgot
Somehow it seems familiar to me
Clutter scattered round the floor, papers and pictures
Ruined by dry rot
Something's watching as I walk through each room.
Eerie.
Rusted bedframes, broken chairs, things lay scattered, disrepair.
Once I felt just the same: my heart was broken, in despair.
Once.
Now it's different, it's not so cold, not like this vacant ruin.
Where once I was trapped in dizzying illusion,
Not much different than this small, silent dingy place
Now no longer hiding, a smile stays on my face.
A squeaky wooden door, with crystal doorknob still sparkling
Stands wide open in silent testament to the brightness encircling
The once-trapped soul, who emerges from tight restraint
In the world of a Narcissist who's grip was ever-choking
And constant, mounting fear evoking
Running
Breathing
Safe
The door is closed on that cold, dark past
The winter sun is fading fast.
Night is falling, another day over.
I no longer look over my shoulder.
Onward
Upward
Soaring
Only forward
Gorgeous, thriving life,
Where love is promised,
Family and friendships last
Another door stands open wide
Where joy cannot be denied.
