Adulterous Desires

I was drawn from
rhythmic dreams by the screech
call of an eagle and wondered if there was
jeering in her tone. Was she laughing at the pair of
frantic insects twitching below as if they were the
sum of all creation?

My arms spanned a meager
five feet across the desert floor and I wondered if she
saw us at all while soaring on her
eight-foot wingspan a thousand feet above.

The selfie my lover and I took
would later give the exact spot of this
love affair in time and space. My eagle friend was free,
not bound by the gravity that gave us
pleasure as we flailed
awkwardly against the earth.

My voice cried out,
wishing her back from the edge
of the horizon, but she vanished as all
created things do.

My eyes followed her
path then returned to the open sky,
smiling at the panting efforts
of my lover, unaware of my adulterous
desire for another.
