Image for the poem Like the Wind

Like the Wind

she passed away so quietly
falling asleep in my arms
eighteen years old
give or take a day
a gentle soul
she once caught a squirrel
just to let 'em go
I thought I could save her
but my love was not enough
and now I doubt my very soul
even though she was old and sick and frail
I must have died, I feel so numb
yet I know the pain will come
and stay a long, long while
I do hope the pain will end one day
thinking of my girl at play
she ran like the wind
always showing off
as her fur became the waves of the sea
flowing, rippling and beautiful to see
stubborn and willful
and happy all on her own
games were for puppies
chasing balls were for retrievers
but she had important scents to smell
and while I was always welcome to come
it was just so I could find the way back home
yet she always looked back
to see which way to lead
always out front showing me the way
well she's leading me to the stars
with grace and dignity
I hope I am worthy
to visit with her in heaven
run like the wind Baby Boo
like the wind
.
