Atlantic Hurricanes

The clouds piled up like mountains
That hid the brilliant sun
Then rain streaked across the landscape
Like racers on a run.

The wind screeched like a banshee
While trees danced and swayed and fumed -
As leaves flew through the melee
Like witches on their brooms.

Waves broke along the coastline
You could hear their mighty roar
Like a pride of lions
Up and down the shore.

From the wind the sand was blowing
Like a million marching ants
That cried as they were flying
Like a million Buddhist chants.

Yachts that tried to sail
Out the fury's awesome reach
Are now just float some jet some
As they crashed upon the beach.

A roof flew by - going somewhere
And elsewhere chimneys crashed.
A  car has stalled in midtown
The water to its dash.

People huddled in the shelters
As their pet dogs howled and barked,
And watched CNN on TV
Til all the screens went dark.

Now the winds have ceased their howl
And what is now Virginia's bane
Was just another season
Of Atlantic hurricanes.
