The Ego and I

There is no way of controlling me,
I said to myself

You can't fight what you don't see,
You can't bid me farewell

I've been with you since you knew yourself,
I was raised in your shell

So when you think you run your life,
you can't tell if it's you or myself

--- harmonica --

I know what's good and what's evil,
Though sometimes I can't tell them apart

They tried to rid me of all my demons,
In the end that barely left a mark

There are many shadows here amongst us,
But there are none in the dark

So there's no reason to face them now,
I see the sun's about to depart

Author's Note
Feels a bit like a spoiler to write an explanation (albeit in the title), would have loved to hear your own interpretation

This characterises the ego and our constant struggle to control it. It plays with the idea the true you and your ego are two different and often fighting personas. I was thinking of adding a verse around the theme of finding balance  as in the end, we are both of them. It's better than living in either extremes ends of Ego control like addicts or Monks/Nuns (or any other fanatical religious practise of abstinence from life)
